Next Big Thing for Mobile Phone Networks

Next Big Thing for Mobile Networks

HatNet or Haterogenous networks are definitely a big part of what is operators and vendors are focusing on. The killer HatNat technology has still to come and all the companies from orthodox giants like Ericsson, NSN, Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent have come up with small cells solutions besides other small vendors like Tyco, Mobile Access etc. Alcatel-Lucent made an early impression in Small Cells market with its Small Cell product earlier than anybody else but its real test will be now when Ericsson has introduced its own small cell product called DOT. Really small, claims to be only 300 gms and is first of Ericsson Radio Dot System product line.

The business case of any small cell is simple how many users and what cell and user average and peak throughput it can support and how much coverage it can provide at given KPIs criteria level. Not to mention few hours deployment and use of Internet as transport back haul are mandatory features of any small cell and Ericsson claims to be long way ahead of Alcatel-Lucent product and says to be negotiating sales and deployment terms with AT&T.
Alcatel -Lucent solution support 32 users and its spec sheet is available online but did not and cannot replace Distributed Antenna System deployments because of capacity and coverage requirements, which Alcatel-Lucent small cell cannot meet.  But on the other hand Ericsson DOT system product which they have very very recently launched claims to change all that. So, how much water they hold in their claim remains to be seen.

LTE Optimization

LTE Optimization

With advent of new cellular network technology called LTE or Long Term Evolution all the three segments of Cellular networks namely Radio/air interface, core and transport having LTE has caused new optimization challenge.

The common performance indicators called Key Performance Indicators KPIs which are Accessibility and Retainibility are not only to be met to measure performance of the network but also throughput in down link and uplink. It may be easy to say in general factors effecting LTE throughput but at the stage of deployment for an LTE system there are many consideration which are not measurable directly but effect LTE DL and UL throughput heavily. Most of those factors come from site installation and UL RSSI.

UL RSSI is measurable quantity and is measured on PUSCH and PUCCH  channels on LTE. But other site installation which have found to effect the throughput can only be gauged from peak and average throughput itself. The criteria should set should be set with respect to SINR and bandwidth of LTE carrier (1.4Mhz, 5 Mhz, 10 MHz etc.)

How to set that criteria and how to optimize all LTE and UMTS KPIs using throughput are well covered in training Course 2 by Mojo Solutions and Services MSS LLC.
